Boswell Fights for Workers, Stands Up to Attacks on Democratic Union Elections

Press Release

Date: March 31, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Elections

Today, Congressman Leonard Boswell spoke out on the House floor against a move by Republicans to strip transportation workers of their right to a fair and democratic election when choosing their union representation.

"As a senior Member of the Committee and a pilot myself, I am appalled that Republicans have chosen to play politics with legislation as important as the FAA Reauthorization and Reform Act," said Boswell. "Instead of focusing on jobs and the economy, Republicans are continuing to crusade against working Americans and middle class families by targeting union representation elections for hard-working Americans. Under this legislation, Republicans would deny transportation workers and their unions the basic tenets of democracy by ordering an absent vote in a representation election to be counted as a "no" vote."

Boswell addressed the House during debate on the rule to consider H.R. 658, the FAA Reauthorization and Reform Act.

"Instead of stripping our transportation workers of their democratic rights, why don't the Republicans look within their own ranks and apply this election concept to Wall Street?" Boswell said. "From here on out, make every corporation that received government assistance count an absent shareholder vote as a "no" vote when considering executive compensation and bonus packages. That may have saved this country a lot of heartache two years ago."

The House is scheduled to vote on H.R. 658 on Friday.
